Update: Ulet Bulu Is Home & Happy!

Scroll down for English version, Buddies!

Kisah Ulet Bulu sebelumnya: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/…

Terima kasih smile emoticon

Previous story: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/…

Just wanna share the news that Ulet Bulu has returned to his hometown on March17, 2015, joining his brother Anak Babi (Piglet) and his mom Mopi. It was like a small party with all the kids who came to welcome Ulet Bulu back!

Ulet Bulu will need to be taken back to Klinik Hewan Jogja on April 8, 2015 for evaluation and another x-ray to check on the progress of his surgery. It will take some time for Ulet Bulu to recover completely and we are glad that he has a caring person like Nathalia who stood by him and made effort to help him when the one who supposed to be responsible in taking care of Ulet Bulu walked away. It is also because of YOU who give a helping hand; donation received has covered almost ¼ of the total expenses.

We’re looking for a way to conduct an education program on the importance of sterilization to control dogs population in that area, and hopefully, mass sterilization drive as well.

If you still want to help Ulet Bulu or give support for our education and or sterilization program, here’s how:http://animalfriendsjogja.org/page/donation.php#howtodonate

Thank you! Stay awesome and caring, as always!

Ulet Bulu Request For Help

Scrool for English Version

Terimakasih banyak sebelumnya

———-

“I named him Ulet Bulu (Hairy Caterpillar) because he looks like a chubby walking fur-ball. Ulet Bulu belonged to my neighbour. Ulet Bulu often comes to our house to play and eat. On Saturday morning, March 1st 2015, some children reported that Ulet Bulu’d been hit by a motorcycle. I saw both of his back leg couldn’t support his body and there’re several blisters in his inner thigh. They said that the accident happened on 28th February 2015.

In my neighbourhood, many people have dogs as pets but they just let the dogs roam around the neighbour. They rarely feed their dogs. So it’s almost impossible to see them bringing their dogs to vet when their dogs are ill! The children in my neighbourhood often come to me for help if their dogs are ill.

At noon, that Saturday, I called the nearest Vet in my place to come and check Ulet Bulu’s condition. He gave Ulet Bulu analgesic and vitamins because our place is located in a quite remote area in Klaten and far away from animal clinic. He diagnosed that there’s some bone fractures, but there was nothing else he could do because Ulet Bulu would need further treatment. The ‘owner’ didn’t care at all about Ulet Bulu’s condition. Not even willing to be taught how to gave the medicine to this poor puppy. In fact, they don’t want to take care of him anymore because now Ulet Bulu’s handicapped! They ‘gave away’ Ulet Bulu to our housemaid who loves dogs but however she’s not capable of caring for one. I was so confused because right now I’m taking care of my sick uncle who needs intensive care, my daughter, and the dogs at my house, beside the limited time, I also don’t have vehicle to take Ulet Bulu to Jogja for further treatment.

Finally, AFJ helped us to take Ulet Bulu to Klinik Hewan Jogja (KHJ) to get a better treatment. The x-ray result showed that there were fractures on the right leg that cleave the thigh bone and also at the left leg near to its joint.
At noon on 8 of March, a surgery to fix the broken bone was conducted by Vet Agung at KHJ. The plan was to perform internal fixation utilizing plates. However, he found out that the bone callus was already formed, so the option left was to fix the bone with wire. Now, Ulet Bulu is still getting an inpatient care at KHJ until he’s stable and can be taken care at my house.

Vet Agung and KHJ gave us a lenience and relief payment, but still it’s hard for me to pay it off by myself. So I’m asking for your generosity to help me out for the surgery and medical expenses for Ulet Bulu. I will take care of Ulet Bulu at my home during his recovery period. It may take months for him to recover.

Thank God, the cost of pre-surgery examination and medication at the clinic has been paid off.
I can’t thank enough to all of you who care about Ulet Bulu.
If you want to help Ulet Bulu please send your donation via AFJ. Here’s how:
http://animalfriendsjogja.org/page/donation.php#howtodonate
or please contact AFJ for further information via email to: animalfriendsjogja@gmail.com

I promise, I will give periodic update about Ulet Bulu’s condition through AFJ and to any of you who’s willing to help, can contact me directly via email: grandecaramel_macchiato@yahoo.com
Thank you so much for your help.”

Cat Heaven Needs Siyong More Than Us, RIP Siyong

Please scroll down for English version

On Feb 10, 2015, someone reported about a young cat suffering from prolapsed rectum in Umbulharjo. Seeing the horrible condition from the picture sent and knowing that a rectal prolapse requires immediate medical attention, two volunteers checked on the cat on the next day. There’s no doubt that the poor cat had to be taken to a vet right away! He’d been like that without getting any treatment for 2 weeks!!

We called the handsome cat Siyong. He was one of the strays roaming around the area. Luckily, a caring lady who owns a grocery shop feeds them. Until one day Siyong came with a strange red bulge pushing out from his behind! As cringe-worthy as it is to look at, it’s also a serious medical issue that requires immediate attention. Anytime an internal part of the body protrudes outside the body, it can result in blood restriction and tissue death. If left untreated, that protruding tissue could die, which can make the cat ill and ultimately be fatal.

The lady felt so sad seeing him like that, but feeding him and letting him rest at her shop were the best she could do. She even had to hide Siyong because some people who felt disgusted tried to catch him and throw Siyong away!!

Siyong immediately had his first medical treatment from Vet Andre Lisnawan. The prolapse was corrected through gentle massage back into place. It was successful at first. However, as Siyong was still being observed so that the underlying cause can be identified and treated, it was happening again and again. Siyong was very easily to get stressed out, and every time he felt uncomfortable, he’d strain too hard.

Siyong had two surgeries; unfortunately the rectal tissue was already damaged too severely, so the diseased portion of the rectum had to be amputated.

The second surgery was conducted in the middle of the night on Feb 23, 2015. Late at night, the prolapse happened again after Siyong strained too hard as he tried to defecate, and this time it was worse. Upon receiving our frantic call, Vet Andre rushed to the volunteer’s house where Siyong was looked after.

Post surgery, fully awake, Siyong looked calmer and a lot more comfortable than before. He even asked for food and enjoyed his meal. Siyong could finally urinate without any problem. Siyong was still closely monitored and given intensive care.
However after the progress he made, today at noon Siyong suddenly had breathing difficulty. Before we could take him to the clinic, Siyong said goodbye

A message from beloved Siyong to all of you who have made him part of your life, even if it was only for a short time:
“Don’t regret all the things you’ve done to help me although it didn’t work out as you expected to be, you’ve tried your best but the cat heaven is the place I want to be for now. There are still many of my friends who need your help, so don’t be sad for you can be there for them as you could for me…”

Our deep gratitude to all of you who have always been there and actively helping the animals in need, and also to all of you who keep on supporting AFJ in our effort in fighting for the rights of the animals. The fight is still continuing and sometimes it seems endless, but we are sure that together we can keep the fight and make this world a better place for all species! update: Sam, The Bulletproof Cat #VIDEO

Oya berhubung aku belum bisa jalan, jadi kalo pipis and mpup masih ditempat.

“Orang-orang seperti kamu tak tahu seperti apa rasanya disakiti. Karena kamu tak punya perasaan. Orang-orang seperti kamu tak merasakan apapun.” – I Am Sam

1. Makanan khusus critical care (seperti Hill’s Prescription Diet Canine/Feline A/D)
2. Alas tidur penyerap cairan/lembab, koran bekas, handuk.
3. Kursi roda untuk kucing
4. Sponsor/OTA

“People like you don’t know what it’s like to get hurted. Because you don’t have
feelings. People like you don’t feel anything.” – I Am Sam

Do we really want to be that heartless person mentioned in I Am Sam movie dialogue? Maybe you’ll answer “No!” to that question, but sadly to say that kind of people exists.

Last Saturday, late at night, a report was filed through our website, a male stray cat
was found wounded and lying helpless in someone’s yard since Saturday morning, unable to move. Joanna wasn’t the one who found the cat, it was her neighbor who later called on her and they thought the cat’s a hit and run victim. Joanna’s report was shared among AFJ volunteers and a volunteer who lives nearby the area immediately contacted Joanna, but kept on failing. Until the next day, on Sunday noon finally she texted us back and soon we met her at the location.

The male cat was lying inside a small empty fish pool, protected by an umbrella and
covered in towels Joanna provided for him. But the cat was soaking wet from the rain
pouring heavily the night & the morning before! As soon as Joanna saw him in her
neighbor’s yard, she wanted to move him somewhere safer and dry as soon as possible, however she didn’t succeed since the cat kept on hissing fiercely and trying to scratch her with his claws, and she’s also afraid if mishandling occurred it would hurt the cat even more. Feeling worried about the cat and out of desperation, Joanna filed her report to us.

We named the cat SAM. The pain & misery Sam endured were tremendous!! No wonder he’s trying to protect himself by acting aggressive, but he’s just one terrified and badly wounded innocent cat! We’re lucky to have a professional vet nurse and experienced wildlife conservation activist of Wildlife Watcher Singapore volunteering for us right now, we sure can use his skill
Carefully he handled the horrified & injured Sam, and off we rushed him to the clinic.

Sam, suffers from spinal penetration at lower spine, a bullet’s embedded there, causing paralysis of his hind legs. High chances of 70 percent the 2 hind legs will be permeate paralysis. 30 percent recovery through intensive physical spinal therapy. Prognosis of SAM’s x-ray indicates high chance of fatality to undergo surgery to remove the bullet in his spine. There was blood stain in Sam’s urine so an USG procedure was performed; internal bleeding’s found. Not only that, several open wounds covered with maggots were also found in different spots on his body

After 3 days of strict and regular medication in minimizing infection from maggot
wounds that Sam suffered, through observation from caregivers, Sam is now able to
defecate and urinate on his own.
Sam’s quality of life are 90 percent from the observation and prognosis as now Sam is able to eat on his own and recovering well under the caregiver care. Hopefully his
condition will remain stabile and only get better.

However, what Sam’s needs are NOT only TLC and thumbs up, so he made this wishlist for you who want to help him:
1. Critical care pet food (such as Hill’s Prescription Diet Canine/Feline A/D)
2. Absorbent pads, old newspapers, towels.
3. Cat’s wheelchair
4. Sponsors to cover his medical & daily care expenses
5. Foster parent/adopter, experienced in looking after a cat with special needs
6. Continuos support, education and action to stop animal cruelty!!!

RESCUED: KITTEN RAJO STUCK IN A RAINDROP DRAINAGE CHANNEL

Scroll down for English version

Keajaiban memang nyata ketika kita berusaha gigih!

======

Last Saturday, 25 Oct 2014, upon receiving a report and a call for help from a caring family, AFJ volunteers faced a challenge to rescue a kitten stuck in a raindrop drainage channel in Ndalem Village, Kotagede. The kitten fell inside the channel on Thursday!
It was devastating to hear the kitten constantly crying for help inside the pipe, we were so worried that he’s already too weak and couldn’t wait any longer.
After discussing with the house owner to find out the best way to get the kitten out immediately, we found out that the position of the drainage channel made it hard for us to clearly locate where exactly the kitten was without taking down the entire channel, and it would take a long time and a lot of damage to the building. So we had to think of other ways to conduct the rescue.

At first we thought the kitten was stuck somewhere in a curve nearby the bottom opening of the pipe, his voice was so loud there, but no, it was just the echo, and the kitten’s position was actually up there near the top opening of the channel! We could think of two ways to get the kitten out, first option was: by inserting a hose wrapped in a cloth covered with wet food to encourage the hungry kitten grabbing the cloth so we could drag him up and get him out from the top opening. This way, the risk of injury can be minimised since his position’s closer to the top opening.
However, after 2 hours, it seemed that this way didn’t work out. We could feel the kitten grabbed on the cloth, but the curvy pipe made him lost his grip over & over again as we tried to slowly pull the hose up. And his voice was getting weaker  A volunteer could only try to lift his spirit up by keeping on yelling comforting words from the bottom opening, so the kitten knew he was not alone and that help was coming.

Second option was to flush him down the pipe with splashes of water! But this would be our last option. The kitten could get badly injured during the flushing as he would fall from more than 3 metres high out of the vertical pipe before the bottom opening!! And there’s possibility he’d gulp too much water during the flushing!! But this is the last chance worth trying as the clock is ticking.
Prayers were chanted by the caring family as we took our last effort, and on the 4th splashing, finally the tiny kitten managed to let go his grip up there and get his way out of the channel safely!!!

Miracle it is!!! We were all soooooo happy that the tiny kitten was not injured, quickly we dried and warmed him up. Soon after, he cried for food!! And this little baby ate like crazy! He must be starving after 2 days without food.

Mr. Pudjo Sarjono, the head of the big family, named him RAHARJO PIPO, Raharjo is a Javanese word meaning “prosperous or doing well” and Pipo means “pipe”. His nick name is Rajo Pipo, or the king of pipe . The top opening has been secured with wire mesh to prevent similar incident happening again.

It has been a week after his rescue, and Rajo is doing well at a volunteer’s house. He’s been dewormed and given multivitamin daily. He’s still put in the quarantine, separated from other cats to minimise the risk of contagious disease or virus and bacteria infections.
Miracle does exist when you work it out. Rajo is just another example of a small form of life that is often taken for granted in human-dominated world. But the existence of caring people like YOU, who respect life no matter how small it is, will save more and more Rajo from suffering and unnecessary death.

We’d like to give our appreciation to these following people: Mr. Sodiq & wife (they own only a small restaurant with not much income, but they share food for stray cats in the neighbourhood and sterilise them frequently to control their population), Mr. Pudjo Raharjo & the big family who were being cooperative in the rescue effort, Mr. Adi for lending us hairdryer and buckets, Mr. Min our highly-respected neighbourhood leader & handyman who always set an example for other leaders to be compassionate and respectful towards animals, and last but not least: all of YOU who care and act tirelessly to end animals abuse and suffering!

Please consider to help Rajo and other animals under our care by donating, sponsoring, fostering or adopting and volunteering. As a small non profit & volunteer-based group, we rely heavily on the help of caring people like you. Here’s a link to find out how you can lend a helping hand through our programs.

Cane Cane the Hit and Run Cat Gets a New Lease on Life

Cane Cane was found in Jomegatan, Yogyakarta and brought to the home of Anett and her daughter Fritzy by a concerned person. She knew they loved cats and left Cane Cane with them as she didn’t know how to treat a cat with such terrible wounds.  She didn’t know what happened but we think Cane Cane was a hit and run victim as she had multiple wounds on her back legs and she was just dragging her legs behind her and walking along the side of the road using her front legs.  Cane Cane is very tame and she kept approaching people in the neighbourhood but everyone was shooing her away until this kind person decided to bring Cane Cane to Anett and Fritzy’s home.

IMG-20140605-WA0012

Anett called AFJ to ask for advice as she would leave to go back to her homeland in Germany soon so there was no way for her to keep her.  Anett wanted to help so she paid for vet Dr Janey to come and take her and treat her superficial wounds and x-rays to check for broken bones.  Thankfully there weren’t any, so after a few days at the clinic, she was able to join the AFJ cats at the cat sanctuary.

IMG-20140605-WA0007

AFJ called in Ari the animal therapist and she gave her some physiotherapy and it looks like Cane Cane may be able to get some use back in her legs.  Sadly, she had some bad sores from scraping her rear on the ground when trying to walk and being wet from sitting in her own urine for long periods, so Yani and Nana decided to see if she could use the homemade wheel chair they had made for one of the other lame cats.  It took a little bit of getting used to and she had to get some strength back into her front legs but after a few steps…

IMG-20140605-WA0004

Success!! She took to the wheelchair with such joy in her eyes.

IMG-20140605-WA0003

Now Cane Cane is a happy girl, getting about without her back legs and rear scraping on the ground.  Hopefully soon her wounds will heal and she will become stronger and stronger with the help of more physio and love.

IMG-20140605-WA0009

If you feel you have a place in your heart or home for Cane Cane, please contact AFJ.

We welcome sponsorship, where you can give a monthly donation for physio, care and food, or anyone one interested in providing a foster or forever family for her.

Cane Cane is not going to give up, and she’s waiting just for you…
